Biography: |
I am the lone creator of my sculptures, which are a blend of ancient armor-making techniques and modern welding and finishing processes. I use no forms or castings, which ensures that each scupture is a ONE OF A KIND.
Each piece begins with a flat 4'x8' sheet of 16 gauge cold roll mild steel along with various sizes of steel rod. It is either hand-sheared or plasma-cut into the desired form; the edges are sanded and polished and the steel is buffed to a shine. Thicker pieces of stell demand the heat of a propane-powered forge which is used to soften the metal so that it can be worked by hand. Individual pieces of a sculpture are finally welded to an inner skeleton using MIG welding and oxygen/acetylenene welding. The finishing usually involves a 4-step process of cleaning the metal; treating it with a chemical wash; burning off any remaining residue; and finally, applying several layers of acrylic or an oil, depending on the desired results. The addition of fiber optics and movement to my work gives each piece a unique personality and presence that often leaves the viewer with a feeling that they are not only looking at art -- but art is looking at them.
My subject matter focuses on the creation of meaning through mythology and iconic symbols of our culture.
